Turn student insights into powerful support

At Along, we know that getting insights from your students is just the first step. Especially as we move towards the midpoint of the academic year, the real magic happens when you turn that foundational data into meaningful, timely support.

That’s why we’re highlighting a key resource to help you move from simply gathering information to taking effective action: “Turn insights into support.” This resource is designed to help you be more reflective, monitor progress, celebrate successes, and provide the right support at the right time. By implementing this routine every two to three weeks, you can ensure that the overall story of your students’ needs is clear, allowing you to plan the right actions.

The protocol is broken down into four simple steps:

1. Gather your information: The initial focus is on objective observation. Using guiding questions related to student responses, participation, and trends, you record what you see. The key tip here is to simply simply record your observations and not come to any early conclusions.
2. Narrow your focus: With your observations recorded, it’s time to intentionally select which area you will focus on. Ask yourself, “Which observations or trends do I want to focus on?” and “Why did I choose this as my focus?”
3. Interpret the data: This step moves you beyond observation to analysis. To fully understand the meaning behind the data, the protocol encourages you to try and find as many interpretations as possible. Challenge yourself by asking, “What does the data suggest?” and “What assumptions could I make based on this data?”
4. Plan and execute next steps: Finally, turn your interpretations into a concrete plan. Once the data is interpreted, you can determine the appropriate next steps with your student. Talk with your students to help you answer any outstanding questions and strengthen your plan together.

A regular process like this empowers you to be an intentional, responsive educator. It helps you ensure every student’s story is seen and supported as you navigate the rest of the academic year.
